Agrobiodiversity and in situ conservation in quilombola home gardens with different intensities of urbanization Acta Botanica
Ávila,Julia Vieira da Cunha; Mello,Anderson Santos de; Beretta,Mariane Elis; Trevisan,Rafael; Fiaschi,Pedro; Hanazaki,Natalia.
ABSTRACT Among the agricultural environments of traditional communities, home gardens are frequently cited as high agrobiodiversity sites. However, the agrobiodiversity of home gardens along a rural-urban gradient demands study in order to identify possible influences of urbanization and to support mitigation of impacts. The present work investigated the role home gardens play in the in situ agrobiodiversity conservation of plants in quilombola communities with different degrees of urbanization. The study found that more urbanized communities have larger home gardens, but the average richness of plant species in these areas was not statistically different among the communities. Furthermore, the abundance of plant species was similar. Medicinal and food...

Silva,Flávia dos Santos; Landell,Melissa Fontes; Paulino,Gustavo Vasconcelos Bastos; Coutinho,Henrique Douglas Melo; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino.
ABSTRACT Plants have been reported as used by local populations to treat various infections for a long time, which has directed several pharmacological studies. The main aim of this work was to evaluate three plant selection criteria with better predictive power to detect extracts with antifungal action: (1) medicinal plants that are not used for indications of infection and inflammation; (2) plants with direct citations for inflammation, except for infection; (3) plants with direct citations for inflammation and infection selected quantitatively by Syndromic Importance Value (SIV). We tested the action of 23 hydroethanolic extracts of plants against the fungi Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Cryptococcus gattii and found no differences in...

Availability and use of woody plants in a agrarian reform settlement in the cerrado of the state of Goiás, Brazil Acta Botanica
Tunholi,Vanessa Pessanha; Ramos,Marcelo Alves; Scariot,Aldicir.
Protected areas are important sources providing plant resources for human populations, and contributing to the livelihood and income of families. To test the ecological apparency hypothesis, that there is positive relationship between the visibility of a species and its use, we conducted an ethnobotanical survey in the protected area of the Itaúna rural settlement in the municipality of Planaltina, in the state of Goiás, in central Brazil. The phytosociological parameters were obtained in 5.6 ha area of the Brazilian cerrado (savanna), and the ethnobotanical survey conducted with semi-structured interviews with 75 people. There was a weak positive correlation between the use value and the phytosociological parameters. A principal component analysis showed...

Can socioeconomic factors explain the local importance of culturally salient plants in a social-ecological system? Acta Botanica
Sousa,Rosemary da Silva; Medeiros,Patrícia Muniz de; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino.
ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to determine whether socioeconomic factors explain the importance of culturally salient plants to social-ecological systems. Extractive communities of the Araripe-Apodi Environmental Protection Area in Northeast Brazil were studied, and a random sample of the population was selected. Quantitative variables (education, age and income) were analyzed using Spearman correlations, while categorical variables (gender and occupation) were analyzed using Mann-Whitney tests. Relationships between socioeconomic factors and the importance of culturally salient plants were all weak. Nevertheless, age influenced the local importance of the largest number of species. Other factors not considered in this study (historical, cultural,...
